Workplace Bullying Doesn’t Start with a Shout

When we think of bullying, we imagine yelling, dramatic scenes, public humiliation. In reality, it begins very differently – quietly, subtly, almost invisibly.

At first, it’s small gestures. Ignoring your opinion in a meeting. Whispered comments behind your back. Being subtly excluded from projects that used to be your domain. Sarcastic jokes that, under the guise of humor, undermine your value.

No one starts with a scream because then the problem would be easier to notice. Bullying creeps in slowly, step by step, blurring the line between minor frustration and systematic harassment. And that’s the insidious part – victims start doubting themselves. “Am I overreacting?” “Did I take it the wrong way?” “Is it my fault?”

Tension builds, uncertainty grows, and isolation sets in. Every day at work becomes a test of endurance. Every day you wonder how to avoid making a mistake that could be used against you. Every day you struggle with emotions that gradually turn into stress, insecurity, and sadness.

And then the question arises: when will you find the courage to say ‘enough’?

Reacting early is crucial – even the smallest act of assertiveness, a conversation with a trusted colleague, or documenting the situation can stop the escalating spiral. Bullying doesn’t stop on its own – it grows if left in silence. Don’t ignore it, react!
